Nelson, did not realize that your published background makes you something of an expert on greenhouse gas emissions. So, have you seen Al Gore's movie "An Inconvenient Truth"? If so, what is your own conclusion about the actions to be taken?

A good movie. The science may not be quite so clear as that, but the point that changing the atmosphere like we're doing is going to have consequences is right on. And, there is a lot of reason to fear sudden changes in climate. For example, there are massive amounts of methane (a greenhouse gas) stored in the deep seabed as hydrates. Some scientists believe that a small increase in the deep sea temperature could release this methane over a short period of time.

We probably can't do much to undo the change that will come from the greenhouse gases already emitted, and we face the growing energy demands of the developing world. However, our experience after the energy shocks of the late 70s/early 80s (when we became much more energy efficient) gives reason for hope that we can stabilize or even reduce emissions from the developed world, and keep the growth of emissions from the developing world in the lower scenarios through new energy utilization and production technologies.

An end to deforestation wouldn't hurt, either.
